March Madness Bracket Scoring: Which System Is Fairest?
Every bracket pool argues about scoring at some point, usually right after someone with a terrible first round wins the whole thing by picking the champion. Here is how the common systems compare.
Doubling by round (the standard)
The most common system doubles the points each round: 10 for a first-round game, then 20, 40, 80, 160 and 320 for the champion. Each round is worth the same total (32 games times 10 equals 320, 16 games times 20 equals 320, and so on), so no round dominates on paper. In practice, picking the champion is worth as much as the entire first round, which is why the final weekend decides most pools.
Flat scoring
Every correct pick is one point, no matter the round. This rewards a strong first weekend and makes the final games matter much less. It is simple, but it can make the last week feel like it does not count.
Upset bonuses
Some pools add the winning team's seed to the points, so a 12-seed beating a 5-seed earns extra. This rewards bold picks, but it adds math that casual players do not love, and it can reward luck as much as judgment.
A middle ground
If your group feels the champion pick decides too much, try a gentler increase, like 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 13 points per round. The later rounds still matter more, but a good first weekend keeps you in it.
Tiebreakers
The usual tiebreaker is predicting the total points in the championship game. Ask for it when brackets are filled out, not after.
Practical tips for running a bracket pool
- Open brackets right after Selection Sunday and lock them when the first round tips off.
- Decide whether the First Four counts. Most office pools start with the 64-team first round.
- Send a reminder the morning brackets lock; that is when most people fill theirs out.
Sports Picker's March Madness bracket pool uses the doubling system (10 up to 320), loads the field on Selection Sunday and scores every bracket live. Run one for college basketball or the office, and start it before the field is set.
